Artist Statement

I was born in Philadelphia and grew up in South Jersey. I began piano lessons at the age of 11 and continued piano studies for 15 years.  I also studied voice, and have bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in music. Prior to my degrees in music I earned a bachelor's degree in English literature, and did graduate studies in secondary English in urban education at the University of Pennsylvania.

As a classically trained singer, I performed in New York and Europe where I lived for five years. There in Germany I had the great fortune to train with Erika Seeger-Mueller who had performed at the Berlin Opera with Richard Strauss conducting.

I have continued on as a pianist and singer. While at CU-Boulder working on my doctorate, I performed cabaret with William Bolcom and Joan Morris. And I have a CD “Cabaret Sauvignon”.

I became a visual artist later in life and have taken classes at the Denver Art Students League. My artwork has been on display at Prism Galleries.

I also enjoy writing.

You can learn more about my art and music on my website www.patriciabaxterwright.com.

A favorite quote by William Massey:

“Whence did the wondrous, mystic art arise of painting speech and speaking to the eyes?

That we by tracing magic lines

are taught how to embody and to color thoughts.”
