Artist Statement

My work as an artist motivates me to bring my experiences of life into materials in my studio, putting into form and practice vision and convictions about life, in all its potential and fragility. I work in drawing and water media, egg tempera and gilding on gessoed boards. Exhibits of my work involve installation elements, exploring fresh ways to engage viewers with traditional forms.

My approach to painting encompasses intimate experiences and daily circumstances, quotidian rhythms and revelatory moments. The artistic process I practice cross-references contemporary visual culture and ancient tradition, translating between personal and universal, temporal and timeless. The most compelling aspect of this work is how I am changed as I see more deeply into the meaning I observe around me. I communicate to a viewer through my own self-discoveries. While I work in solitude, I see art-making as primarily relational, a way of aiming to become the person I want to be in relation to others. People, places and experiences are not merely subjects for the imagery I make; they are mysteries to ponder.
