A variety of mediums such as painting, printmaking, photography, mixed media, sculpture, handmade books and small installations are acceptable. Anything over 6' x 6' should be discussed with curator. Artwork can run the gamut from serious and political, to frivolous and whimsical, plus entertain both adult and children's audiences. The library gallery staff will jury the entries considering the space, theme content, and quality of artwork. You are not guaranteed that all your entries will be accepted. (PLEASE read WCA Show Standards before bringing artwork. If art not ready for hanging, it will not be allowed to enter.)

INTERACTIVE "WORDPlay" INSTALLATION INFORMATION:

All WCA Artists entering the WORDPlay Show are asked to make several 'WORD Poles' for the WORDPlay Installation. A 'WORD Pole' is one word attached to a flat shape, which has a pole attached. The curator will make the base that will hold all the 'WORD Poles'. These 'WORD Poles' will be collected by July 24 for final completion of installation base. See diagram of installation and images of letters & word assemblage.

'WORDS' Either the 'words' or 'word shapes' must have some 3-dimensional qualities (assemblage). Completely flat is not acceptable! The letters should be from 1.5" - 4" in height (short words taller, long words smaller please). The 'word' can be designed vertical, horizontal or curved. See word ideas below, and advise curator about which words you will use so we don't have repeats

'WORD SHAPES' The 'word' should be attached to flat background, such as foam core. That complete 'word shape' should be no larger than 6" x 14" and can be square, rectangular, round, or shaped. The front can be painted, sewn, textured, collaged, decorated, and the edges and back of the 'word shape' should be painted black.

POLES: Use a 1/2"x 48" wooden dowel (hardware store) and paint it black. The pole must be securely attached to the back of the 'word shape', and be able to withstand "interactive" use by the audience.

ASSEMBLAGE IDEAS: Children's alphabet letters, wooden blocks, buttons, yarn, tiles, beads, feathers, fabric, junk, wine corks, lids, nuts, bolts, doll parts, legos, tree bark, acrylic gels, clay, metal, papier mache, letters carved out of foam board or wood, various wire, tubing, chain, strung beads for cursive letters, license plates letters…. Use wire - "electric", "wired", orange peel - "orange", crayons - "colorful", cereal, nuts, seeds - "food", "nutty", "seedy", glass - "transparent", fur - "fuzzy", twigs -"trees", batteries -"energize", seashells - "seashore", tiny wheels - "driving", rope -"tied up", stars - "night", "sky", screws - "screwed", army men - "war", toys - "play", eyes -"seeing", computer parts - "tech", rocks - "nature", brushes - "paint", cigarettes - "ashes", dollar bills - "money", saw blades - "cut", hearts - "love", small figures - "totems", matches - "burn", zipper - "zip it up" … Be CLEVER & CREATIVE!

BASE: A slanted base made of plywood includes several rows of holes so 30 - 50 3-dimensional 'WORDPoles' can be inserted into this black base. The 'words' can be moved around to create different phrases by the viewers. Therefore, the title "WORD Play"! Because the top of the base is at an angle from front to back, it will be easy to read the various rows of words. The back of the base will be against a wall, and unused "WORD Poles" can rest against the wall for the next viewer. Not all words need to be used each time, not all holes need to be filled. Instructions will be near the installation.

Possible 'ARTSY' WORDS to use for WORDPlay Installation: Please do several and a variety. Advise curator about words you will use. lindaeverson50@msn.com
