The Kitchen Goddess Women have ruled the domain of the kitchen for generations; standing over an arsenal of equipment designed to soothe them and make them more efficient. Looking onto their yards from their post at the kitchen sink, decades of Kitchen Goddesses have cooked and cleaned their way into immortality. While some women were complacent in their role within the home, scores of others sought to redefine themselves in the working world, in academics or in other capacities. The gadgetry and décor of kitchen utensils was updated to appeal to the evolving Goddess’ needs, making their kitchen tasks easier and more efficient. By the late 1990s, 70 percent of married women were an active part of the American workforce, leaving the ranks unfilled in the traditional kitchen role. While mixing bowls and cookbooks gathered dust, women garnered recognition in all areas of modern life. Recently, society has had a nostalgic rebirth, with longing for family dinner hour, home-cooked meals and the woman who can "have it all," with a family, job and flawless house. This exhibit is a collection of symbolic representations of the Kitchen Goddess from the American past through present-day.
