Gerald N. Hays, Physicist

I'm currently working with 'Dreams,' the meanings, the layers, the images that occupy the dreamstate, the fragments that we remember and symbols that are evocative of the message of the dream.

When exploring the dream state I have always wanted to portray the fleeting nature of dreams, and how they change. From the conception of this show I have been working with the statement: 'To make the invisible, visible'. To this end with the input from my scientist cousin, Gerald N. Hays, PhD, physicist we have come up with a film that reacts to heat by changing color. The heat source is hidden behind the metal canvas and the viewer is treated to a changing canvas thus 'the invisible is made visible'. The dreamer portrayed in the picture is surrounded by dream images that come to life and then fade away as the heat is cycled on and off.

I use old woodcuts and linocuts as well as drawn images to evoke the mystery of the dreams. These images are copied on mylar and suspended within wax and pigments. Seemingly unrelated images are melded together by the consistency of black and white lines, archetypal images and brush filled color strokes that flow behind one image to the next.
